How To Beat Burnout, Avoid Overwhelm, and Add More Joy To Your Life

March 7, 2024

I developed a coffee habit at the tender age of 40.

Prior to that, I drank and could tolerate as little coffee as possible. I made it through college on one cup of coffee a semester – usually the one night during finals week that necessitated an all nighter bingeing material I needed for the exam (thanks, Econ).

But, when I deliberately decided to add coffee to my daily routine, I had a very specific reason why:

I’m a hardcore foodie. While I love the sheer culinary experience of food, what really draws me to food is a combination of my passion for discovery and adventure, an appreciation for culture, a need for variety, and a love for unique experiences.

Excluding coffee, with its rich offerings, ancient history, and global significance, from my food repertoire felt like an oversight that needed correcting.

I wanted to be able to marvel over the nuances and artisanal bounty of different coffee drinks in different places the same way I do with cheese or wine or regional street food.

I’ve traveled to Italy, tried Luwak coffee in Bali (pictured), and hiked the Blue Mountains in Jamaica, home to some of the world’s best coffee micro farms, with no real appreciation for it and without bringing home any souvenirs for myself. Talk about your missed opportunities!

Also, continuing to learn about how my own neurodivergence expresses itself at every stage of my life led to a growing recognition of the performance benefits of caffeine at various doses.

But more importantly, my daily espresso tonic became an extension of my personal values: seeing, being in, and experiencing the world from a fully integrated sensory perspective.

Leaning into what we value is an important way of increasing joy and fulfillment in our lives and reducing the symptoms of burnout and overwhelm means doing so on both macro and micro levels.

It can be as grand as a multi-country tour of a different continent…

Or it can be as simple as a daily cup of coffee.

You may be all-in on “Marie-Kondoing” anything that doesn’t spark joy and getting rid of it…

But take the time today to think about how you’re intentionally ADDING joy to your life and what‘s stopping you from including even more of it in ways both big and small.

Stay fearless.
